Community Walk to Prevent Suicide

Hoosick residents walk to save lives on October 3

HOOSICK FALLS – In the United States, a person dies by suicide every 16 minutes; that’s more than 33,000 lives lost each year. It is estimated that an attempt is made every minute; with close to one million people attempting suicide annually. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens and young adults, and the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. among adults ages 18-65.

Hoosick has seen two teen suicides this year. These events have touched the entire community, directly and indirectly. In an effort to prevent another tragedy, the family of Joe Sweeney is working with the Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition to organize an Out of the Darkness Community Walk on Sunday, October 3, 2010.

Walkers should gather in Wood Memorial Park where candles and ribbons will be distributed. The “Walk for Joe & Tyler” will begin at 6 p.m. It will travel north on Main Street, turn left on John Street, and then left on Church Street to the Main Street intersection. The walkers will then proceed back to Wood Park.

Everyone is invited to St. Mark’s Church (adjacent to Wood Park) after the walk. St. Mark’s has generously offered to serve a free dinner to all participants. They will open the church and the church hall for fellowship and a time of sharing after the walk.

There is no cost to participate. Donations are welcome and will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). These walks are held nationwide to raise money for AFSP's vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, advocate for mental health issues, and assist survivors of suicide loss.
